The rock factory in Sodankylä -99

One of the localities we didn't visit was Vuossavaara aventurine quarry.
Since the collecting fee was too high we took an alternative route.
We made a visit at the rock factory right outside of Sodankylä. There we was shown the factory and the machines. They had a diamond saw that could cut large blocks of several tons into stone sheets. The polishing was handled by a similary big machine. Very impressive! At the outside of the factory there was a lot of garbage rocks, cracked and broken pieces. Only small pieces of up to 1000 kg.... ... here we got a good opportunity to collect most of the common rock types from he area, as aventurine quartz, granite and sandstones. There was also some pieces of spectrolite from the southern part of Finland. |
