Mineral description : Scorzalite

Scorzalite with light blue kyanite and brown rutile.

Crystal system Monoclinic
Habitus Mostly as grains or massive aggregates, crystals tabular or bipyramidal up to 3mm.
Cleavage [110] good, fracture irregular.
Hardness 5.5 - 6
Density 3.38
Color Blue, bluish green to dark blue.
Streak White to pale blue.
Luster Vitreous, translucent to opaque.
Description A rare phosphate mineral, only used as mineral specimen. Forms a substitution serie with lazulite where scorzalite is rich in iron and lazulite have more aluminium.
It is hard to tell the two minerals apart, but scorzalite is often darker than lazulite.
Occurance  
Associates Rutile, kyanite, andalusite, quartz, lazulite and other aluminium phosphates.
Notes Type locality : Corrego Frio pegmatite, Divino, Minas Gerais, Brasilia.
Named after the brasilian mineralogist E. P. Scorza.
Slight soluble in warm hydrochloric acid.
Localities A rare mineral in scandinavia.
Sweden :
  • Hålsjöberg, Torsby, Värmland. As dark blue aggregates together with rutile, kyanite, trolleite, lazulite and other phosphates.
  • Hökensås, Tidaholm, Västra Götaland.
  • Norrö, Haninge, Stockholm.
  • Norrskogen, Arlanda, Sigtuna, Uppland.
Norway :
  • Våler, Solör. One single specimen found in morain.
Finland : No known localities.
