Mineral class Silicates : Inosilicates : Diopside - Augite group.
Chemical formula Ca(Mn,Mg,Fe)(Si2O6)
Crystal system Monoclinic.
Habitus As small pyramidal or tabular crystals. Often as fine grained dense masses.
Cleavage Perfect in two directions with 90 degrees angle between the surfaces.
Hardness 5.5-6.5
Density 3.2-3.3
Color Dark brown, light brown, reddish brown to yellowish brown.
Streak  
Luster Vitreous.
Description  
Occurance In manganeese rich contact metamorphic scarns.

Notes  
Locations A less common pyroxene mineral with a couple of good localities in Sweden.
  • Långban, Värmland. Commonly as fine grained dark brown to light brown masses. Also as sharp dark reddish brown crystals in dolomite and calcite filled cavities.
  • Harstigen, Jakobsberg, Pajsberg and Sjögruvan, Värmland. Relatively common.
