Scapolite (meionite) from Innansjön.

Crystal system Tetragonal
Habitus Prismatic crystals with vertical striation. Also as grainy aggregates.
Cleavage Poor.
Hardness 5-6.5
Density 2.55-2.74

Luster Vitreous to dull.
Description  
Occurance In contact metamorphic limestones.
Associates Garnet, Diopside, Vesuvian.
Notes Often orange yellow flourescens.
Soluble in hydrochloric acid.
Locations A common in many limestone quarries in Sweden.
  • Lindbo limestone quarry, Västanfors, Västmanland. As small crystals.
  • Malsjö limestone quarry, Grums, Värmland. Commonly as derb and crystals.
  • Hönsarvsberget limestone quarry, Borlänge, Dalarna. Up to 5 cm crystals.
  • Malmberget, Gällivare, Lappland.
  • Forsby limestone quarry, south of Hjälmaren.
  • Stora Vika limestone quarry, Södermanland.
  • Innansjön, Burträsk, Västerbotten. As purple aggregates in limestone.
