Blue lazulite from Västanå, Sweden.

Crystal system Monoclinic
Habitus Crystals bipyramidal, prismatic or octaedric. Most commonly as massive or grainy aggregates.
Cleavage [001] distinct, fracture irregular, splintery or rough.
Hardness 5.5 - 6
Density 3.10
Color Blue, bluish green, dark blue or pale blue.
Streak White.
Luster Vitreous, translucent to opaque.
Description  
Occurance In highly metamorphic quartzites rich in aluminium.
Associates Kyanite,
Notes Gives off water when heated in a test tube.
Localities A not so common mineral in scandinavia.
Sweden :
  • Hålsjöberg, Torsby, Värmland. Commonly as aggregates or grains in kyanite quartzite.
  • Västanå, Bromölla, Skåne.
  • Hökensås, Tidaholm, Västgötaland.
  • Vakerberget, Loberget, Vansbro, Dalarna.
  • Ransäter, Munksfors, Värmland.
  • Dicksberg, Munksfors, Värmland.
  • Gräsmark, Sunne, Värmland.
Norway :
  • Storsjöen, Nord-Odal. In a quartzite together with kyanite rutile, svanbergite and pyrite.
  • 20 km south of Elverum. Up to 7% lazulite together with kyanite and topaz in a quartzite.
  • Saltfjellet. In a number of places in the kyanite zone, sometimes with topaz.
Finland :
  • Raatevaara, Kiihtelysvaara. In highly metamorphic quartzite.
  • Valkeavaara. In quartzite.
  • Viistola. In quartzite.
  • Kutemajärvi, Oriveden.
