Mineral description : Ilmenorutile

Possible ilmenorutile crystals on a base of dark apatite.
From Knipan mine area, Iveland, Norway.

Habitus As flat prismatic crystals. Commonly as unregular grains.

Luster Sub metallic, opaque.
Description  
Occurance In granitic pegmatites.
Associates Thortveitite, quartz, feldspar.
Notes In Norway it is found in every pegmatite containing thortveitite. It is the pegmatitic mineral containing most scandium after thortveitite, at average 1.5% in analysed samples.
Type locality : Miass River, Zlatoust region, Ilmen Mountains, Ural, Russia.
Discovered in 1854 by Koksharov, named after the Ilmen mountains.
Localities A rare mineral in Scandinavia but with some nice localities in Southern Norway.

Sweden :

  • Kråkemåla, Oskarshamn municipal, Småland.

Norway : Only found in granitic pegmatites in Sørlandet.

  • Storsinken, Knipan mine area, Iveland.
  • Ramskjaer, Søndeled.
  • In a number of other pegmatites in Iveland, for example Tveit 1, Omdal 1, Håverstad 1, Håverstad 4, Tuten 2, and a number of more localities.
  • Auselheia, Tvedestrand.
  • Monbua, Tromøya, Aust-Agder.

Finland : (Sorry if the names are messed up, but I don't speak Finnish)

  • Penikojan, Someron. In a pegmatite.
