Covellite on copper ore in feldspar from Pahtoavaare.

Habitus Platy or foliated. Often powdery to crusty surfaces.
Cleavage [0001] Perfect, brittle fracture.
Hardness 1.5
Density 4.6-4.76
Color Indigo blue with iriscens. Opaque.
Streak Black
Luster Adamantine.
Description  
Occurance As a surface alteration on other copper minerals.
Associates Bornite, Chalcopyrite, Chalcosite.
Notes Type locality : Mt Vesuvius, Napoli, Campania, Italy.
Named after the italian mineralogist Niccola Covelli (1790-1829).
Locations A rare mineral in Sweden
  • Boliden, Västerbotten. Only in small quantities.

  • Bastnäs, Riddarhyttan, Västmanland.
  • Nordmark, Värmland.
  • Falu mine, Dalarna.
