Crystal system Orthorombic (probably)
Habitus Earthy masses, micro crystalline crusts or botryoidal crusts.
Cleavage Fracture conchoidal, brittle.
Hardness 2 - 4
Density 1.93 - 2.4
Color Blue, bluish green to green, brown to black when impure.
Streak White.
Luster Vitreous to waxy, earthy. Translucent to opaque.
Description  
Occurance Forms in the oxidation zone of copper deposits.
Associates Malachite, tenorite, halloysite, nontronite.
Notes Colors a flame green.
The name comes from the Greek words for gold and glue, since it was one ingredience used in solder for gold.
Localities A few localities exists in Scandinavia. Sweden : A number of localities exists.
  • Pahtohavare, Kiruna, Lappland. As blue massive aggregates with malachite or as botryoidal crusts covering the sides of cavities. Often with tenorite.
  • Åmotfors copper mine, Charlottenberg, Värmland. As an alteration of chalcopyrite.
  • Viscaria, Kiruna, Lappland.
  • Kirunavaara, Kiruna, Lappland.
  • Pershyttan, Nora, Västmanland.
  • Skejatjåkko, Gällivare, Lappland. (GFF 22:307)
  • Östmark, Torsby, Värmland.
  • Harstigen, Persberg, Värmland.
Norway : A number of localities exists.
  • Friedrichsminde, Årdal.
  • Arendal.
  • Gulnes.
  • Straumsheia coppermine.
  • Holmestrand. In cavities in basalt.
  • Bandaksli, Telemark.
