Mineral description : Bixbyite

Bixbyite crystals from Övre manganravinen, Ultevis.
It is hard to see, but there are one big crystal showing ten crystal faces, and a number of smaller.

Crystal system Cubic.
Habitus Well developed cubes, sometimes with modified corners. Also as grainy aggregates.
Cleavage [111] imperfect.
Hardness 6-6.5
Density 4.9-5.0
Color Black.
Streak Black.
Luster Dull metallic, opaque.
Description  
Occurance In manganese ore bodies.
Associates  
Notes Named after the American mineralogist Maynard Bixby.
Locations A relatively rare mineral.
  • Ultevis, Lappland. Commonly as cubes in manganeese ore, as grainy aggregates in hollandite and as finegrained aggregates.
  • Långban, Värmland. Rarely with alpha-vredenburgite in manganophyll scarn.
  • Thomas range, Utah, USA.
