Mineral description : Anatase

A shiny anatase crystal from Storkingen, Jämtland.

Chemical formula TiO2
Crystal system Tetragonal.
Habitus As sharp dipyramidal crystals.
Cleavage Perfect basally and in four dipyramidal directions, fracture subconchoidal.
Hardness 5.5 - 6
Density 3.8 - 3.9
Color Usually black opaque, but also exist in blue and yellow transparent crystals.
Streak Pale yellow.
Luster Submetallic to adamantine.
Description Anatase is polymorph with rutile and brookite. At above 915 °r;C anatase is turned into rutile.
Occurance  
Associates Quartz, rutile, brookite, feldspar, hematite, chlorite, micas.
Notes  
Locations A rare mineral in Sweden but with some famous localities in Norway.
  • Kjolland, Kall, Jämtland, Sweden. As small crystals together with rock crystals.
  • Gräslotten, Offerdal, Jämtland, Sweden. As small crystals together with rock crystals.
  • Alnön, Sundsvall, Sweden.
  • Hardangervidda, Norway. Crystals up to 1.5 cm in size on clear quartz.
  • The oslo field, Norway.
