Mineral class Phosphates : Amblygonite - Pharmakosiderite group.
Chemical formula (Li,Na)Al(F,OH)PO4
Crystal system Triclinic.
Habitus Columnar or prismatic crystal, as euhedral crystals or as coarse crystalline masses.
Cleavage Lamellar cleavage, [100] perfect, [110] good, [011]distinct, fracture uneven.
Hardness 6
Density 3-3.1
Color White, blue green to yellowish white.
Streak White.
Luster Vitreous, pearly on cleavages.
Description  
Occurance In granitic pegmatites and pneumalytic dykes in granite.
Associates  
Notes The high lithium contents gives red coloring of a flame.
Type locality : Chursdorf and Arnsdorf, Penig, Sachsen, Germany.
Hard to separate from montebrasite.
Amblygonite of gem quality often have a pale green flourescens.
Locations A less common mineral in Sweden.
  • Varuträsk pegmatite, Skellefteå, Västerbotten. Commonly as large cleavable masses (up to 1.5m) or single coarse crystals of 1.5 to 10 cm size. Amblygonite is less common than montebrasite.
  • Utö, Stockholm archipelago.
