Ultevis

DESCRIPTION

Not ready yet!
tobedone The Ultevis area is a manganeese ore district in the Swedish mountains, stretching over an area about 25 km long and some km wide. The ore is concentrated in distinct layers so it could be followed as distinct bands in the ground from a few cm to a couple of meters thick. The best bixbyite is found in a small ditch called "Övre Manganravinen" or "Upper manganese ravine" where the ore is about 1m wide. People have digged and blasted a ditch a meter wide and 15m long. I visited it this summer and found some bixbyite. Since it is located in the mountain it takes a while to get there, about 3-4 hours of walking and 3 hours back, but it was a wonderful day so even if we hadn't found anything it would have been a nice trip.

Mineral assemblage

Mineral assemblage Bixbyite, Hollandite, Piemontite, Alurgite, Hyalophane, Svabite, Ferri-braunite, Powellite,

Bixbyite

Bixbyite crystals from Upper manganese canyon (Övre manganravinen).
It is hard to see, but there are one big crystal showing ten crystal faces, and a number of smaller crystals on this specimen. Collected in 2000.

Hollandite

Hollandite crystals in quartz from the south slope of Sörhårås.
Collected in 2000.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Piemontite

Piemontite crystals on piemontite. The holes in the rock is filled up by a hard clay. It is very hard to get the clay out but when you get it out the crystals are very nice.
Collected in Övre manganravinen in 2000.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Muscovite

Alurgite in quartz and feldspar. Alurgite isn't considered to be an unique mineral. It's seen as a manganeese rich muscovite.
We found a lot of alurgite in some pegmatitic veins. Together with the alurgite was small amounts of bixbyite, hollandite and fluorite.
Collected in 2000.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Hyalophane

Hyalophane crystals on ....
It seems like there has been calcite on this rock but it's been etched away.
Bought at the 2000 Kopparberg mineral fair.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Svabite

Svabite crystals in calcite.
The svabite crystals are not of high quality. It seems like they have been exposed to some process that's etched the crystals. Probably when they were formed. It displays a rather weak fluorescens with a pale yellowish color.
Bought at the 2000 Kopparberg mineral fair.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Braunite

Massive braunite.
This rock was marked as ferri-braunite, but I haven't been able to find any references so until I get any other proof I will consider it to be braunite.
Bought at the 2000 Kopparberg mineral fair.
(300 dpi, 800x600, k)
Powellite

A small grain of powellite lies in this rock. It is easy to see it in UV since there are a couple of quartz grains too. The matrix concists of massive piemontite.
This rock is taken from the boulder described in Bought from Dennis Holmberg during my 2000 Northern Scandinavian tour.
